Five & Fabulous Initiative

We are thrilled to invite you to be part of our “Five & Fabulous” initiative in celebration of our
five-year anniversary. Ballet Afrikana continues to be dedicated to providing culturally centered dance education focused on identity development—self-knowledge—and the fundamentals of movement. Through arts education, students not only explore dance, but also become empowered to learn and embrace their heritage leading to: heightened self-esteem, creativity, discipline and the tenacity to achieve.

We invite you to celebrate with us—BA’s “Five & Fabulous” initiative—throughout the 2018-2019 season. Your support is invaluable as we continue to provide youth dance education for the Greater Rochester community and endeavor to experience Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre’s 60th Anniversary season.

Over the past five years, we have fabulously…

  • Provided—and continue to provide—culturally-centered dance education to more than 50 youths within the Greater Rochester community

  • Transitioned from a co-op dance facility to a permanent facility within the Beechwood Neighborhood, naming our space the House of Shu Wellness Center—featuring a community room and dance/wellness studio

  • Forty participants traveled to New York City to experience Dance Theatre of Harlem—one of the oldest Classical Black Ballet companies in the United States

  • Provided mentorship and instruction of Kemetic Yoga for a Senior Project at School Without Walls Commencement Academy; the student is now studying at the University of Las Vegas

  • Established partnerships with the Horizons Program at the Warner Graduate School of Human Development and Education, University of Rochester and the Step 2 College Program with Rochester City School District’s East High School

Ballet Afrikana lives to promote Black arts, education, and cultural development by making these offerings accessible to African descendants residing within Greater Rochester. Become a supporter of Ballet Afrikana’s 2018-2019 “Five & Fabulous” initiative. Our families appreciate your support!
